The Tea Party movement is but one manifestation of America growing restless with the policy goals pursued by the current Congress and Administration. While America “likes” Barack Obama, as reflected in higher ratings for him versus his policies, it is disgusted with Congress. Congressional approval ratings have again started declining, after a brief period of improvement to start the year.
The first opportunity for the Tea Party movement to make a difference will be in the 2010 Congressional elections. With this election coming approaching quickly, America is verging on a change of heart with respect to its Representatives and Senators. The latest batch of polls using a “generic” ballot – one that merely asks if a person would vote for a Democrat or a Republican shows a staggering change in the mindset of typical Americans. While a pre-presidential election generic ballot resulted in double digit leads for Democrats versus Republicans, the most recent average ballot shows Democrats only holding a 1 percent lead relative to Republicans. This double digit point drop is consistent with the ongoing results in NY, where now Senator Gillibrans, won in November by solid double digits. During a recent run-off election to fill her seat, the Republican candidate has erased the double digit lead Democrats enjoyed from the Fall, and is now in striking distance to win once all the absentee ballots get processed. That is an amazing reversal and an indication that the 2010 elections may not treat fiscally irresponsible Democrats politely.
Bottom line is the Tea Party movement is tapping into a growing unease in America. This unease results from a government seeking to significantly expand its role in the economy and reduce personal freedoms by taking ever-larger chucks of our paychecks. Among other objectives of this movement, one of them is to change the country's current path such that America is again clearly known around the world where: successful businessman are praised not vilified, the federal budget balances, and the government exists to protect individual rights rather than believing individuals exist to bankroll a politician's personal policy whims and wishes.
